I think my blog needs a change. I'm not sure how yet. Any suggestions?

Arizona Statehood Day

A few facts about my fair state, in honor of the day (click here if you want them all)....

Arizona became the 48th state on February 14, 1912.

The saguaro cactus blossom is the official state flower. The white flower blooms on the tips of the saguaro cactus during May and June. The saguaro is the largest American cactus.

The bola tie is the official state neckwear.

The amount of copper on the roof of the Capitol building is equivalent to 4,800,000 pennies.

Arizona observes Mountain Standard Time on a year round basis. The one exception is the Navajo Nation, located in the northeast corner of the state, which observes the daylight savings time change.

The state's precipitation varies. At Flagstaff the annual average is 18.31 inches; Phoenix averages 7.64 inches; and Yuma's annual average is 3.27 inches.

Arizona, among all the states, has the largest percentage of its land set aside and designated as Indian lands.

At one time camels were used to transport goods across Arizona.

Bisbee, located in Tombstone Canyon, is known as the Queen of the Copper Mines. During its mining history the town was the largest city between Saint Louis and San Francisco.

The original London Bridge was shipped stone-by-stone and reconstructed in Lake Havasu City.

A person from Arizona is called an Arizonan.

I think that our party last night was a success.

Wednesday night musings.

-Last night I went to Ameristar casino with Steve. I only play slots, but it was entertaining. Would've been even better if I had pulled out when my money was doubled, but... that didn't happen. All told, I only lost $12, so I don't feel too bad about it.

-While sleeping last night, I had a dream in which a very close friend died. That, combined with the Ash Wednesday reminder of "Remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return" has raised the subject of death higher in my consciousness than usual.

-George and I saw Hitch on the free pass he got at Mardi Gras. It was fantastically funny. I think they had to make it super funny or it would risk being the same as any other so-called romantic comedy.

-My apartment is hosting a party this weekend. Everyone is welcome. Ask/call me for details.

Last night I had a dream that I met Jeff Goldblum at Scottsdale Fashion Square mall and spent the rest of the day with him, walking around and getting to know each other.

Does this say something about my psyche?

I saw The Woodsman last night. It was both more and less disturbing than I expected. The main character manages to inspire both empathy and disgust, which left me not really knowing how to feel. I thought it was a well done film, though... thought-provoking-- as movies about serious topics should be.

The State of the Union actually moved me a couple of times. As per usual, I didn't listen as carefully as I could have... I get bored. Still, I was glad to see voting Iraqis and dying soldiers get some recognition in the course of the speech.

For those of you I have neglected to tell, I got into GWB! It feels good to have a solid option lined up for fall. I might have some tough decisions ahead, but I can cross that bridge when/if I come to it!
