I pressed the snooze button once this morning, and I swear it didn't go off again. So I'm leaving later than planned, plus I forgot about the one hour time difference. But it's ok... all will be well.

Larry Walker

I'll admit, a couple weeks ago I had no idea who he was, but now it's official: I'm a fan.

John's birthday

The two things of which I'm supposed to remind John: 1) talk to your parents-- August 30 and 31, 2) volleyball-- 9:30 pm Wednesday

Plus, happy birthday again. Get working on that last will and testament.

Parking

Someone has been parked in front of our building's garage all day. I saw them get a ticket this afternoon and was relieved that the Clayton P.D. found something to do.

Laurie the Exterminator!

Friday night I came home after seeing Edward Scissorhands to see a fit-looking little cockroach scurrying across the dining room floor. I promptly retrieved a flip-flop from my room and killed it, sending white guts shooting out. Cockroaches are gross. I hope they don't become a problem.

Coffee

Last night I drank some coffee at about 10 p.m. I went to bed around 1 a.m. and I think I fell asleep about 4. I'd like to blame the coffee, but who knows... I do know that I am tired today.

Cards

I went to a soggy baseball game today and the Cards kept ahead of the Pirates, but only barely. Go Cards! And Tony Womack, my favorite former Diamondback.

Travel

I'm leaving on Thursday for a trip through the Northeast, but I still need to arrange places to stay in Boston, the NYC area, and possibly Charlottesville, VA, although I'm not positive I'll go there. It'll get done.

Olympics

They have television cameras in the most amazing places to give us Olympic coverage... it's quite impressive. If only they could put little cameras on all the athletes; I think that would really add to the excitement.

A note on my windshield

Hello. My name is _____ ______. this morning my car rolled into your back bumper. I live down the street at ____ Byron. Please call me if there is any damage. Sorry. 314-___-____.

Thwarted

Yesterday (a MONDAY), we arrived at the Arch (always capitalized?--never mind, let's go with Jefferson National Expansion Memorial) at approximately 2:50 p.m. only to find that the next available tram to the top would depart at 5:30 p.m. So there you have it, four years in this city and I still have yet to make it to the top of the arch. On the up side, I saved myself $8.

Bleeker Street

My new favorite Simon & Garfunkel song. My favorite line: I saw a shadow touch a shadow's hand

Weird dreams

Last night I dreamed that my friend Erik had 29 cats. Kittens, actually. Some of them were lifting dumbells with their tails.

A phrase about which I've been thinking recently:

With all due respect...

Covers a multitude of sins, doesn't it? I mean, you can preface just about any rude, inconsiderate, or unpleasant statement with it, and somehow it becomes acceptable to say. That is why I like that phrase. Hypothetically, of course.

Steve's Theory on Street Names

According to Steve, you can tell that we live in a "white-bred neighborhood" because we live on Byron Place. He explained that one can determine the level of uppity-ness in a neighborhood by the suffixes attached to the street names. Ones that fall into the category of pretentiousness include: Boulevard (Blvd.), Place, Lane, Circle, Trail, and Court. Acceptable suffixes are: Street, Road, Avenue, and Drive. I forgot to ask about Way, but I suspect that would make the upper-class list.

Streets I've lived on since the time I was 2:
Highland Ave.
Quarterhorse Trail
Berridge Lane
Crestwood Way
Wydown Blvd.
Forsyth Blvd.
Rosebury Ave. (I think it's an Ave.)
Byron Pl.

Looks like I'm just a white-bred neighborhood kind of gal.

Back in town! For most of the month, at least. The trip to Kansas City was really great. I saw a lot of Jen Coil (stayed at her parents' house), so that alone was fantastic. She also helped me think through my interviews a little more and focus some of the questions I had written down. I did about 4 interviews, and one with a group of four people. They went pretty well... I heard some interesting perspectives and I'll have plenty to work with over the next few weeks. I still don't feel great at being an interviewer, but it'll get easier.

Oh, Saturday morning we went blueberry picking! I have lots of fresh blueberries in the fridge now; hopefully they'll be eaten before they go bad. Hmmm, what else... I saw Laura's house in Alton last night and it's so cute! I'm happy for her. Also, I felt like one of my downstairs neighbors was giving me a dirty look this morning, but hopefully it was just my imagination. That's all. I'm going to vacuum my room.
