Fat Tuesday...

is still more than a week away, but I would like to have a pancake dinner. Read more about the tradition here.

I can either make pancakes or go somewhere for pancakes (Cracker Barrel has some darn good pancakes). Let me know if you would like to be in on this pancake feast. Vegan friends, you may have to bring your own batter.

I'm pretty sure this is the song I was thinking of (for all my ice-skating friends):

I Wanna Drive the Zamboni, by The Zambonis

Well I went down to my local arena.
I asked to see the manager man.
He came from his office and said, "Son can I help you?"
I looked at him and said, "Yes you can."

'Cause I wanna drive the zamboni.
I wanna drive the zamboni.
(Yes I do.)

Since I was young it's been my dream
to drive that there zamboni machine.
I'd get that ice just as slick as could be,
and all the kids would look up to me.

'Cause I wanna drive the zamboni.
I wanna drive the zamboni.
(Yes I do.)

The manager said, "Son, I know it looks keen,
but that right there is one expensive machine.
And we've got Smokey who's been driving for years."
About that time, I broke down in tears.

'Cause I wanna drive the zamboni.
I wanna drive the zamboni.
'Cause I wanna drive the zamboni.
I wanna drive the zamboni.
(Yes I do.)

Today I bought some Valentine's Day cards. And no, not to send to myself. It may be a little early, but try telling that to marketing people who put out all the Valentine's Day crap (including bad chocolates, ugly but soft stuffed bears holding hearts, and those chalky "candy" hearts) as soon as all the Christmas crap is gone. I think that if I become an old woman with eccentric habits, stocking up on greeting cards I may or may not send will be one of those habits. The other habits I anticipate having are:

-owning a cat. I will never be a "cat lady" who substitutes felines for actual human contact, and I probably will never have more than 2 at a time, but one will be perfect.

-wearing whatever I feel like when I feel like it. Presumably, by the time I'm old (I'm talking late 70s to about 100 years old here), I will either be married or have given up on love and embraced spinster-hood, so I won't feel the need to make any sort of impression when I go out in public. Therefore, a typical outfit might include a bright yellow sweatshirt, paisley-printed MC Hammer pants, socks with some kind of animal print, and.... hmmm, probably Birkenstocks. I won't even have to TELL anyone I'm eccentric.

-making up nicknames for people when it becomes too cumbersome to try and remember their actual names. Nicknames would be based on physical attributes, so I might have one friend I call "Blue hair," or simply "Blue."

If you still know me 50-some years from now, you can see how many of these I fulfill and take notice of the eccentric habits I can't even yet imagine.

Glad to be out

Washington U. tuition rises to $31,100
Post-Dispatch
01/21/2005

Undergraduate tuition at Washington University for next fall will climb to $31,100, an increase of $1,400, or 4.7 percent, from this year, the school announced today.

Room-and-board will also increase about 4.5 percent to $10,754 for full meal plan and newer student housing. The increases are roughly in line with those from previous years, officials said.

In a letter sent to parents and students, Edward S. Macias, executive vice chancellor, said, “The cost of doing business has escalated for the University in ways that are well beyond our control., including significant increases in the cost of employee health benefits, utilities, library books and periodicals, and the challenge of attracting and retaining the very best faculty. Each of these areas rises in cost at a rate significantly greater than annual inflation.”

I don't like to shop at Wal-Mart. But I got a gift card to Wal-Mart for Christmas, so I thought that since the money was already spent, I might as well cash in on it. I went over the amount on my gift card by $4.18 and I've felt bad about it all day. Yet it also seemed somehow appropriate that I was supporting big--no, huge-- business on Inauguration Day. However irrational this thought may be, I felt like I was giving Bush a big stamp of approval by walking into Wal-Mart, which also makes me feel bad.

I applied for an internship through e-mail and got an e-mailed response that said in part, "Thank you for your enthusiastic application." What does that mean? By including the word "enthusiastic," they have made me wonder if I used too many exclamation points.

Tonight I had fun playing games with friends. We started with Scattegories (my Wal-Mart purchase) and finished up with Pictionary. My proudest moment was guessing "Paul Revere" from Chad's drawing of a tower and a stick-figure man.

My roommates want to know what I'm doing next year. So do I. I would happily tell them if I knew. Most of the decisions on that matter are now out of my hands with the exception of a final decision, which will likely not occur until late April- early May.

In 2004, I had a Chippendales calendar hanging in my bathroom. For 2005, it is a Norman Rockwell calendar courtesy of the Paralyzed Veterans of America. I think this is a big improvement.

It's snowing! Again! When I was driving, it looked like one of those spacey screen savers where the stars rush towards you. Or away from you. Whatever-- it was neat looking. It is also cold. But I am layering appropriately.

My drive back to St. Louis was uneventful (as any cross-country drive should be). My mom came with me and it was nice to have company and an extra driver.

This is my week to start exploring part-time job possibilities. I think I'll start that exploration tomorrow.

Today I made good on my inner declaration that I needed to give something to the tsunami relief efforts. It's funny that with a few computer clicks, I can "help" and still feel like I've done absolutely nothing.

Reluctantly, I admit that I'm pretty much a country music fan now. This is my current favorite.

WTF, is all I have to say. It's been raining here ALL DAY. Despite that, the idea of coming back to the valley next year is becoming more and more appealing. Good thing I don't have to make decisions about it any time soon.
